Pallet headboard

A while ago I sent my husband and his friend on a mission to go find me pallets. Pinterest is evil that way. They show you all these amazing, "easy" projects that make you feel that, "Hey, I could do that" and then you lose interest almost immediately when you realise how difficult those pallets are to take apart. This is great from a strength perspective, but when you just want to do a cute little project, can turn into a pain in the ass.

I research how to take pallets apart and came across many posts. If you have a welding machine you could create something like this:

I don't have a welding machine, and this isn't really the type of DIY that I'm interested in, so I kept looking until I found this helpful video:

Very helpful guy!

I decided to go with his reciprocating saw idea. I went and got this at the local hardware store and bought one made by Bosch.

It's still hard work, but at least it works. So finally, I can start on making something.

I've always wanted a nice headboard. In fact, I've put off buying one until I saw one that made me happy. I to this day cannot find one that fills my heart with glee. So I decided to make one instead.

Here's my basic design:

5 equal pieces of plywood for the base of the headboard. Cut them depending on what size you want the end result to be in terms of height and width. I nailed them together like the picture above.

I nailed them together so that I could hide the base behind the pallets, so all on the same side.

I then landed up with this:

I then started taking some pallets apart:

Now I started nailing in the pallet boards to the base:

You can see it start to take shape.

It started getting cold and dark fast so I didn't take more photos because I just wanted to be done before the white walkers appeared (yes, a GOT joke).

I sanded down the pallets and placed a see-through sealant on the headboard. It did darken the wood a little but it's sill pretty nice.

I will upload a photo as soon as it's finished drying and I can put it in the room, you know, production value :)

And here it is!

I think I'll make some bed side tables next to match :)
