Here it is. The finished product.

So I went to Builders Warehouse and bought a 3m floor baseboard to give the mantel a little more depth than a flat piece of wood.

I cut it down to 2 metres for the front and 38 cm for the side.

Then I had to cut both ends at a 45 degree angle so the edge would line up properly. I used my meter saw for this as it can do 45 degree cuts with pin point accuracy. You cannot cut both sides exactly the same or you won't get a proper corner edge. You have to flip one of the pieces over but still cut on the correct side, there for making  a 90 degree angle when they match up. If you aren't 100 % sure what I mean, please ask or check Youtube.

Next I pre-drilled holes through the board and the backboard that I will be attaching it to. This is a lot easier if there are 2 of you. I did it alone. I then used square wood nails and drilled them in. Very secure.

Then I used wood filler to fill any holes that appeared between the board and backboard and the 90 degree edge. It took about 30 minutes to dry before I sanded it down to a smooth finish.

I used a nice thick enamel paint. I did 2 coats. By using a white wood-filler, I didn't have to struggle trying to cover up where I needed to fill in. As you can see, I got a little on the wall, which I just touched up with some of the grey paint I have lying around.

Next the LED strips. I ordered them off Bidorbuy because I couldn't find a store that had the colour and length that I wanted without charging R1000. I think I spend about R300 with shipping. I got 5 metres of soft white and the power cable to easily plug it in. I cut the size that I needed and, even though it comes with 3M sticky tape on the back, I reinforced it with plastic glue. I don't want it falling down at any point. I stuck the LED strip to the back of the new piece of board and let it dry.

It looks really nice in my opinion! The photo makes the lighting seem more intense than it is in real life. It's brilliant mood lighting for when you are watching a movie.
