Fireplace DIY cladding & update (part 1)
Re-cladding a fireplace is not for sissies. It takes patients and the understanding that the next day, you may or may not be able to move your arms :)
The before photo sucks! But I was so keen to begin on the fire place I forgot to take a proper before photo. Basically it look like this:
Some of the main concerns about cladding straight onto this surface is would it stick and would it be heat resistant? After some research, I headed to CTM to have a look at what they had available and what solutions they can offer. Here is what I found out.
I had two options:
1. Chip the surface to create enough rough texture for the Progrip to stick onto.
2. Mix a paste that would turn rock hard and cover the fireplace in a layer of the mixture, therefore creating a rough texture for it to stick onto.
I went with option 2. Much easier!
I used 2 parts Progrip Base Coat cement based powder to 1 part Progrip Key Coat:
Once mixed, I applied it to the fireplace:
I let this dry overnight before I started with the actual cladding.
Cladding applied and the mantel painted white:
Again terrible photo.
Next I am going to add LED mood lighting and a decorative moulding :)
Look out for the update!
