Cookoo Watch review
So a little detour once again in the healthy kick-start series to review my new favourite toy, the Cookoo Watch.
The Cookoo watch was funded through the KickStarter platform and made the required $150,000 goal with little trouble and way before it closed its bidding. Smart watches are becoming more and more popular but the price tag for them is a little steep considering you're not buying an actual smart device, such as a tablet or phone, but more of a platform between you and your device for quick notifications etc. So this to me is a nice way to start in the intelligent wearable technology phenomenon that is about to hit without spending R5,000 doing it.
The tech stuff:
Incoming calls
Missed calls
Facebook messages and posts
Twitter mention
Calendar reminders
SMS / Google Voice SMS
Email notification with true filtering
Your device is out of range
Low battery on iPhone or iPad
Alarm and Timer alerts
By a press of button, you can remotely…
One-button Facebook Check-in : Allows you to share where you are in the fastest way
Remote Photos/Videos taking : Perfect for taking group shots!
One-button Music Control : Press the command button to play or pause the music, or hold the button to skip to the next song
Tag location at any time : Tag your current location on the Cookoo App’s map—later you can add notes, pictures, and even share your map with others.
Find your phone : If you know your phone is around but you just can’t seem to find it, simply press a button to sound an alert and locate it. …and more as the connected app develops!

I like this because I always miss calls from being in an office that requires phones to be on silent/vibrate, missing messages and all those things that might require my immediate (or not so) attention.
Getting started is really easy, in fact, getting it out the packaging (which doubles as a bird's house, how green) is the most difficult part of setting this device up. Thanks for the broken nail.. and pen.. and pride.
Go to either the Apple App store or Android Play Store and download the free app.
Turn bluetooth on in your device settings (or swipe up for iOS7).
It will find your Cookoo watch under devices in the app's main page, click it, follow the setup instructions and well done, it's ready to go.
I prefer keeping it on vibrate when I'm at work (again noise) and I turn it to beep and vibrate when I leave work. This can be done but holding the top right button (mode) until three dots under the cookoo logo appears. That turns it to silent. When you want to change it, just press the mode button again.
A feature that sounds cool but I'll have to wait until the moment strikes to use it, is the photo mode. Basically it means that you can setup your phone somewhere and take a group shot using the watch. Pretty cool.
If you upgrade your phone to iOS7 after you've paired your iPhone and and it doesn't work anymore, you'll need to uninstall the app, remove the bluetooth pairing, re-install the app and pair your phone and watch again. Not too much of a hassle. I didn't need to do this but I know one or two people who had that question.
I'll spend some time getting to know the watch and will post updates soon-ish. Or whenever I feel like it. Don't judge, I'm busy :)
Enjoy your Cookoo watch if you decide to get one!
